NAII Windows NT Support

NOTE: Please PRINT these instructions before attempting to set up your computer to dial into NAII as you will not be able to complete the setup without rebooting the computer and disconnecting from the internet. This page will take a while to load, but in order to make it easier for you to print these instructions, they were not separated into multiple pages. Please wait for the page to load completely.

Click on Start, Settings, Control panel.

 

Double click on Network in the control panel.

In the identification field put your username, and then put internet in the workgroup field. *The above does not apply to machines that allready are on a net work and identified use the current settings.  

 

Click on the services tab, check to see if
"Remote Access Service" is listed as installed;
if it is, skip next step.

If not, click on Add, scroll down and select "Remote Access Service". Click ok.

 

 

At this point Windows NT will need to add components
from the Windows NT cd or install files so it
will do so or ask you to put the
cd in the drive and click ok.

Now you must choose the device to connect with select your modem.

 

 

Click on "Remote Acceess Service"
then click Properties.

Select your modem then click on network.

 

Select TCP/IP and unselect NetBEUI and IPX if they
are checked. Click ok

Click on Configure; select either Dial out only or Dial out and rececive calls then click ok to return to Remote Access Setup. Click continue.

 

Click on the Protocols tab, check to see
if TCP/IP is installed.

If not click add scroll down and select TCP/IP click OK. *If your computer is not on a local area network ("LAN") then you should only need TCP/IPand all others should be removed If you are on a LAN check with your network administrator before removing any protocols.  

Click on TCP/IP then click on Properties, 
click on the DNS tab.

Select enable DNS, put your username in the Host Name field and ici.net in the Domain Field

 

Under DNS Server Search Order click
add type 207.180.0.20 then click Add.

Under DNS Server Search Order, click Add again, type 207.180.0.21 then click Add.

 

Under Domain Suffix Search Order click
add type ici.net then click Add.

Click on the WINS Address tab.

 

Select Enable DNS for Windows Resolution, click OK.

Click on the bindings tab click on the + to the left of Remote Access Server Service, then the + to the left of WINS Client (TCP/IP) and Remote Access WAN Wrapper should be listed. Click on close.

 

Click Yes to restart your Computer.
Wait for your system to reboot.

Once you have logged back into Windows NT, double click on My Computer.

 

Double click on the Control Panel.

Double click on Add and Remove Programs.

 

Click on Windows NT Setup and then double click on Communications..

Make sure that Chat, HyperTerminal, and the Phone Dialler are checked. After that, click on Ok and then Ok again; close the Control Panel.

 

Double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon that
should now appear; you may have to hit
the F5 key to refresh the screen.

Click on Ok.

 

 

Name the new entry whatever you want;
naming it iCi or along similar lines
would be preferable, noting the
town might be a good idea as well.

Check "I am calling the Internet", and "Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect."

 

Fill in all the appropriate phone
information as above and check
Use Telephony dialing properties.

Type in the phone number you dial into iCi with; if a second number is local to you, you can add it as an alternate. Click on Add after each phone number.

 

Click on Finish.

At this point you will have to double click on Dial-Up Networking again. After it comes up again, click on Dial.

 

You will see it automatically enter
the username of Administrator

Enter your username you signed up with (the part before @ici.net in your email address) and enter your password. After this, click ok. (Check save password if you want to skip entering the password each time.)

NOTE: You MUST leave the Domain field blank, or you will not connect!

 

You will see it dial the phone number.

Check Close on dial when you connect the first time.

 

Try pulling up a webpage with
Internet Explorer-- it should come up fine.

Go back to My Computer and Dial-Up Networking again; select the drop down menu on More and then select Edit Phonebook and Modem Properties. Click on Configure.

 

We suggest starting settings of
38400 for 14.4 modems and 57600
for 28.8 and 33.6 to be sure everything
else works ok.
Check all hardware options.

Click on Server, and select PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet. Check TCP/IP, make sure IPX/SPX and NetBEUI are unchecked. Check Enable Software Compression and Enable PPP LCP options. Click on TCP/IP Settings.

 

Make sure these are set at
server assigned IP and name server addresses
as well as IP Header Compression
and Use default gateway.

Click on Script and make sure that None is selected.

 

Click on Security and make sure
Accept any authentication including clear text

is selected.

Click on X.25 and select (none). Click on Ok.

 

 

If you want to monitor your
connection as you are online,
click on the Dial-Up Networking icon
in the system tray down in the lower
right-hand corner by the time.

To make your iCi connection easier to reach, right click on Dial-Up Networking in My Computer and click on Create Shortcut.

 

Click Yes.

You will now see the icon on the desktop.

 

 

To check your hard drive
for errors (which cause most of the very
few NT connectivity issues),
click on Start, Programs, Windows
NT Explorer.

Right click on your boot hard drive (C:). 

 

You will see the hard drive with the
amount of free space.

Click on Tools.

 

 

Check Automatically fix filesystem errors
and Scan for and attempt recovery
of bad sectors
and then click on Start.

Most of the time, this message will occur. Click yes and then restart your computer to have it check over the hard drive.
